personality
Vakhili couldn't be called particularly friendly. She's got a bitter, confrontational streak that could be called 'grumpy' by the less tactful, and she gives off the impression that she's never happy. It's not true, of course, but when she is happy she also tends to be embarrassed by it, and she'll cover that joy pretty thoroughly with a scowl. She'll never be an aggressor and start trouble, but she's got enough passive aggressive to fill a lake. If she's got a beef with someone, she won't confront them, but she'll nitpick in conversation until they're thoroughly sick of her and start the confrontation themselves. She doesn't back down from a fight, even if she doesn't start them, and has gotten herself in enough trouble over the years that she can hold her own. Because of all of this, she seems to be quite the foil for an honest, straightforward type, but she never means harm to anyone who hasn't wronged her. She's very much a believer in an-eye-for-an-eye, so often it's best to just leave her alone. While it may not seem like it, Vakhili is a very loyal herd type. She might in-fight and bicker, but when there's any sort of outside threat, she's the first to protect one of her herd mates. She's got a head for tactics and strategy, and can be surprisingly unbiased when presented with a problem. She is similarly loyal when she finds someone she cares about. She might not be the most openly affectionate creature there's ever been, but that doesn't mean she doesn't love at all. She's fierce and loyal and deep, even if she pretends she doesn't care in public. So will she be the poster child for any gathering? Not at all, but she's confident enough to know she doesn't have to be.
history
Vakhili grew up as the jaded oldest child of her parents, as she was quickly followed by twin siblings that were exceptional in practically everything they did. Where Vakhili was pretty at best, her sisters were gorgeous. Where she was quiet, they were outgoing and bright. She was perhaps more intelligent than they were, but they were lauded for their brilliance as well. It didn't help her self-esteem that she was caught by a coyote when she was a foal, injuring her leg so she'd never have the beautiful, flowing gait of her family. So she was a shadow, loved by her family but bitter for her own shortcomings. She grew up in the herd, her father a high ranking member, her mother a well-respected matron, and her sisters twin jewels. She kept her head down, but it didn't take long for her to feel smothered. Another year to feel suffocated. And a last to feel like she'd die of she didn't leave them. It was selfish, perhaps, to leave a good home when some had none, but she knew she'd be nothing more than the average black sheep if she stayed there. She wasn't ambitious, but she wanted to be known as herself even if the reputation wasn't a good one. She wouldn't be anyone's shadow anymore.
